Metallurgical engineering
Metallurgical engineers play a vital role in developing appropriate materials that can withstand the rigours of use in aircraft, for instance the development of light and sufficiently strong materials for use in airframes and the development of superalloy materials that can withstand the extreme temperatures that occur in a jet engine. Metallurgists therefore work closely with mechanical engineers and applied mathematicians to ensure successful use of a wide range of metals in the manufacturing of aircraft.
